Hello and welcome to North by Northwest! I have no experience of blogging before but I hope this works out. In time, I hope to offer some interesting thoughts on politics, economy, culture and society in Ireland and beyond. The blog is unashamedly intended to provide a viewpoint from the great northwest of our country – on matters national, international and local. As far as I know, there isn’t a site of this type from this region. So perhaps this will become a space for debate not only on wider issues but on local topics too.
I am from the proud constitutional republican tradition and I believe strongly that Ireland – North and South – must be at the heart of Europe. My primary interest is politics – and I hope to put forward views that are both sensible and not merely repeating others.
The great Gaelic saint, Colmcille, set out from Gartan, founded Derry and then sailed across the Atlantic to Iona where he founded his monastery there in 563 AD. In some small way, I hope this blog will help us to look at the challenges of life on this European periphery with the same determination and openness that he showed almost 1500 years ago.
Hey there, welcome to the blogosphere! It’s good to see a blog from what has to be the best region of the North (I’m a bit biased I have to admit). Which part do you hail from?

Hi nineteensixtyseven, thanks for your post – the first ever from a visitor to northbynorthwest!! I do hope you return and post often. If only I was able to reveal my identity I’d present you with a bunch of flowers at Derry City airport and return flights to the destination of your choice – a la Michael O’Leary. Alas, I cannot. You will have to come into the darkest rafters of the Guildhall to find out more. If you dare..
